Developed in 2002, CharterOak is privately funded and headquartered in the cozy suburbs of Connecticut and a operates a sales office in Singapore.
Unlike most audio manufacturing company’s, CharterOak was founded by an end user. Producer/engineer, Michael Deming (Lily’s, Pernice Brothers, Mike Ireland) created CharterOak from the need to obtain more control with his studio recordings. Our goal is not to emulate the classics of yesterday but to create the classics of tomorrow®. Each CharterOak product is assembled & inspected with extreme care by hand and tested in the studio before shipping to the customer. Sonic integrity, extreme durability, design simplicity, and serviceability are fundamental values upon which all CharterOak products are built.

CharterOak Acoustic Devices… The Nature of Sound®.  Award-winning composer and producer Brian Keane recently completed the film score for Ric Burns’ documentary about Eugene O’Neil using CharterOak SA538 vacuum-tube condenser microphone and SA538B dual-diaphragm vacuum-tube condenser microphone on strings, brass and winds. The documentary will air March 27 on PBS, and features Al Pacino, Liam Neeson and Christopher Plummer, to name a few.
“I just wanted to drop you all an email and say how much I’ve been loving the SA538B. I’ve been using it on vocals primarily, but also as a close mono drum mic and even on acoustic guitars (up on the neck) and have been getting great results. I’ve been coproducing a band called Motion City Soundtrack for Epitaph records (although they just signed with Columbia) and we used the SA538 pretty much as the only vocal mic, beating out a vintage U47, M49,and Soundelux U99. The SA538 was also used extensively on Stephen Fretwell’s upcoming release for Polydor UK.
In any case, I love the mic and plan on adding more Charteroak mics to my collections soon.

“I have two matched pairs of the SA538 and continue to be stunned daily by their performance. Today I tracked vocals, cello and an acapella group. Attached is an MP3 of a snipit of the acapella group I just finished tracking minutes ago. Just a Bluemlein pair thru Neve 1073’s and a tiny bit of Neve 2254 compression, our great room and a little lexicon 300 plate. WOW! what a treat to hear sound like that coming back at ya.
